Why Did Mike Israetel Quit Competitive Bodybuilding

Dr. Mike Israetel announced on July 29, 2024, that he would leave the competitive bodybuiling carrer due to health concerns, the challenges of aging, and shifting priorities towards teaching, promoting sustainable fitness, and focusing on other combat sports like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). He still participates in bodybuilding but no longer competes at the highest level.

Competing in bodybuilding required him to spend money on training, supplements, travel, and entry fees without earning any extra income in return. In fact, bodybuilding competitions cost him money rather than making him money. It became more of a passion or hobby that he had to invest in financially, instead of a career that brought financial rewards. This led to his decision to shift his focus away from bodybuilding.

  1. Dr. Mike, I just wanted to write to thank you. In 2022 I went in to the hospital with liver failure due to alcohol abuse. I received a liver transplant, but I was a mess. I also have failing kidneys and I’m waiting for a kidney transplant. Your videos and expert advice has helped save my life. I got my confidence back and was able to get back to a normal life in no small part because of you (and my doctors). Now I work with the hospital to try to help other people struggling with alcoholism and end stage liver failure. Not sure if you will see this but I hope you do, sincerely thank you.
